The Birth Year - Jennifer Strilchuk, Doula and Birth Photography services in Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack and Langley BC

The birth of a baby also brings the birth of a parent. In this fresh and vulnerable time, new parents need nurturing, love and care, just as their baby does.

The first few days and weeks postpartum are a very precious and sensitive time, full of joy, excitement, newness, learning and emotional growth along with physical healing. Just like labor and birth, there are a lot of unknowns in the postpartum period. Once your baby is here it can be a whirl wind of epic proportions!  Many new parents experience feeling overextended as they emotionally and physically navigate and adjust to their new roles. Managing all of life's tasks while balancing the responsibility for the care and well-being of their family's beautiful new addition can feel overwhelming. A postpartum plan with the support of a Doula can assist you and your growing family with a smooth transition and help ensure you don't lose yourself in the process.

Whether you are a brand new parent, recovering from a cesarean birth, or have just welcomed twins, a Postpartum Doula can help you ease into the tender postpartum period, allowing you to become more confident and comfortable in your new role through nurturance, love, professional evidence based support and knowledge.

COMMON SCHEDULES

Postpartum Doula Services are available booked in 4-8 hour increments between the hours of 7am-9pm and can be purchased by the hour ($25/hr), as a package or in combination.

Morning: Since adequate rest is important, prolong your time in bed in the morning. I can assist by attending to household chores that might otherwise beckon you out of bed, nurture you with a healthy breakfast and cup of tea as you lay-in with your newborn(s), and/or provide an extra set of hands to help care for your baby(s) as you enjoy a long, uninterrupted shower. A Postpartum morning session may be especially helpful if your partner must return to work shortly after the birth.

Afternoon: This is a natural time of low-energy for adults and a perfect time for a nap for exhausted parents. A four hour afternoon session allows parents to rest, practice getting outside with their newborn(s), run through age-appropriate infant development activities, provide an extra set of hands to help care for your baby(s) or potentially all of the above. Assistance with light household chores such as catching up on laundry, tidying up after lunch and washing dishes is also valued at this time.

Evening/Dinner: This is a time of transition as parents and older siblings return home from school or work and dinner is around the corner. Additionally, many newborns often experience an "expressive" or "fussy" period in the late afternoon that can be difficult to manage. An extra set of hands to help prepare a healthy dinner and tidy up, make a smoothie for tomorrow's breakfast, prepare school/work lunches for the following day, bath baby or help you attend to your expressive infant(s) may be a welcome break at this time.
