Joyous celebrations during home birth with West Coast Health Collective Midwife

LOVE

"I so appreciate everything Jen did for us. She truly is an amazing woman and has such a beautiful soul.  She provided a calm in my wife that I haven't seen before and taught her how to believe in herself.  She is doing something very special and I can't thank her enough."

- Andrew

"Having our first child with Jen as our doula was a great experience. Jen's calming influence and expertise allowed me to be fully present to support my wife. I didn't need to worry about remembering all the things I had read and learned about the birthing process - Jen knew everything. I was able to focus on keeping my wife as comfortable as possible through the birth experience. I honestly can't really imagine what the birthing experience would have been like without Jen's amazing knowledge and calming presence."

- Karl

"While in labour, Jen's support was unbelievable. She became the anchor for emotions and physical and mental struggles that we were all experiencing. It's like she stood in the eye of the hurricane, always calm and always there for guidance (and some much needed cold face cloths!). All birth stories are different. We could not imagine the story of the birth of our daughter without Jen's huge helping hand in the entire process. Go find Jen. You will not regret it."

Book a Complimentary Consultation

Our first visit is free of charge and carries no obligation. We will meet to discuss you and your partner's wishes for your birth. This is a great opportunity to get to know one another, go over any initial questions you may have, and see if working together feels like the right fit. The right doula is out there for every family.  If I'm the right doula for the both of you, we'll begin this exciting journey together. If it's not a good fit, I am happy to offer referrals to other excellent doulas in the area.

SIX WAYS A DOULA CAN HELP YOU FROM PREGNANCY TO BIRTH AND BEYOND

  • Assist you in building your partner’s confidence in her ability to give birth.
  • Explain how important your role is during labor and prepare you for it.
  • Provide evidence based information about pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period so you and your partner can make informed decisions together.
  • Maintain your autonomy during labor, supporting you and your partner without judgement.  I will always be on your side and by your side.
  • Bring professional labor support skills to provide you and your partner with the support and guidance you desire.
  • Provide practical support as you and your partner adjust to life with a newborn.

What is a doula anyways? I am glad you asked! The word 'doula' comes from the ancient Greek meaning 'a woman who serves.'   A Doula provides current, evidence-based information, empowering families to make informed decisions throughout the process of birth.  She offers continuous emotional, physical and informational support, encouraging the family with reassurance, confidence and guidance. Although a Doula's role is unique to each family she works for, as each mother has different needs for each pregnancy, her purpose is to help parents achieve a safe, memorable and empowered birth experience.

The Evidence For Doulas

What Dads Need to Know for Birth

Continuous support during labor, as provided by a birth doula has been shown to improve birth outcomes and greatly contribute to positive birth experiences. Research has shown that when doulas attend birth, labours are shorter with fewer complications, and moms and babies are more likely to successfully breastfeed.

"My husband (partner) is my left hand and my doula is my right."

Doulas Making a Difference

DOES A DOULA TAKE THE PLACE OF  THE PARTNER?

Absolutely not!   Your role is unique and important. The love you share with your partner and child and your needs to nurture and protect your family are priceless gifts that only you can provide. I can enhance the support that you are able to provide by offering guidance and an experienced perspective. I encourage and assist you, modelling and teaching effective support, and providing reassurance during intense moments. My support allows you to participate to your comfort level, so that you can feel like an essential support for your partner and a dedicated participant in your birth experience. I support and encourage you to take any role you are comfortable taking. I take my cues from you and your partner, offering at any moment privacy, guidance or more intensive physical and verbal support.

Together, we make the perfect support team for your partner, complementing each other’s strengths: your comforting presence,  loving care and attention and my expertise and guidance in childbirth. The pressure on you is decreased allowing you to be more present and enjoy the experience more!
